Classics (II of II)

October 20, 2024 by Dan Stultz So here’s part two of my photo shoot of classic cars. I’ve saved my favorites for this blog post. If you haven’t seen part one click here. These are the fast ones– the race cars– the ones that look fast standing still. 1960-Aston-Martin-Zagato 1960-Aston-Martin-Zagato This sleek, beautiful automobile was made for driving and racing. The car is British made, but the body is designed by Italian auto body design company Zagato, near Milan, Italy. Initially, the factory planned to produce 25 cars, but demand was not as strong as expected and production was reduced to 20. Though the Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato wasn’t fully appreciated when new, time has made these cars extremely sought after by collectors. One example sold in 2018 for over $13 million. 1968-Porsche 911 1968-Porsche 911 The Porsche 911 was developed as a much more powerful, larger, more comfortable replacement for the Porsche 356. Many such as this one were built with racing specs such as suspension, roll bar, lighter weight and engine improvements and destined for races across Europe and North America. “It all began with a test report. Porsche employee Rolf Wütherich summarised the goal of the 911 R project in the fall of 1966: “A vehicle is to be built that is superior to the current competition in its power-to-weight ratio.” —newsroom.porsche.com Similar cars have sold for over $60,000. 1966-McLaren MB1 The 1966 McLaren M1B was designed and raced by Bruce McClaren (a legendary “Kiwi” race car driver and builder) 1966 marked a turning point in auto racing with the McLaren M1B leading the way. New rules in CAN-AM racing allowed for larger engines, more horsepower and better aero-dynamics. You can tell by looking that this car was made to go very fast. Only 28 were ever built. Though this car made big changes, with fierce competition int the racing field, it soon became obsolete. In 2019 one sold for $225,000. 1977-Chevron-B36 1977 Chevron B36 Chevron is a lesser know English auto race car manufacturer founded in 1965. The Chevron B36 was designed to enter the 2-liter racing class of sports car racing, with the chassis accepting various types of engines. While only 21 cars were built (in 1977), they travelled the world, entering a vast number of races in Japan, the United States, Canada, and Europe. –Sothebys A 1977 Chevron B36 sold for nearly $200,000 in 2016. 1958-Ferrari-Testa-Rossa 1958 Ferrari Testa Rossa (Italian for redhead) In the late 50’s and early 60’s Ferraris dominated the world racing scene. With their fine engineering and durability they withstood many of the brutally long European races– the 24 Hours of Le Mans. (Car that travels greatest number of miles in 24 hrs. wins.) The 1958 Ferrari Testa Rossa won the Le Mans in 1958. These cars had a long and interesting history and although yet only 33 Testa Rossas were built between 1957 and 1961. 19 were available in 1958 for sale to customers and this is one of them. By BLOOMBERG NEWS Updated April 20, 2013 12:30 PM “Classic Ferrari racers from the 1950s and 1960s, led by Testa Rossas, are the world’s most valuable motor cars, according to a ranking of auction prices.” A similar model – 1957 Ferrari Testa Rossa reportedly sold for $39.8 million in 2014. back to top
